About This Spot

Stepping into Hokka Hokka Japanese Restaurant, you’re welcomed by an atmosphere that is quietly inviting and comfortably unpretentious. Tucked along Germantown Avenue, this neighborhood gem exudes a calm pace where the hum of friendly conversation blends with the soft sounds of culinary craft unfolding behind the sushi bar. The space feels like a refuge for those who appreciate thoughtful Japanese dining without the rush — a place where time slows enough to savor both the food and company.

The modest, cozy interior sets a mellow tone that encourages guests to linger, whether settling in for a bend-to-your-own-pace lunch or a relaxed dinner. It’s the kind of spot where the attentiveness of the staff feels personalized yet unobtrusive, attentive to subtle requests and ready with quiet recommendations that add a layer of ease to the experience.

Hokka Hokka’s menu reflects a balanced mix of sushi, sashimi, and homestyle Japanese dishes that invite exploration. Here, the familiar comfort of a well-stacked bento reveals layers of care — like tender, wrapped negimaki or the crunch of spicy yellowtail rolls that offer bursts of flavor without overwhelming the palate. Plates arrive thoughtfully composed, presenting fresh fish and vibrant vegetables that feel less like ingredients and more like an invitation to a harmonious meal shared.

What stands out is how these dishes unfold slowly over the course of a visit, with each bite revealing textures and tastes that reward patient enjoyment. Whether you’re dipping into a bowl of comforting udon soup or savoring a piece of delicate sashimi, the experience is grounded in sincerity and a respect for balance. The dessert endnotes, such as the gentle sweetness of mochi ice cream or a slice of chocolate cake, round off the meal with a quiet note of pleasure.

Hokka Hokka quietly earns its place as a local retreat where food is a gentle conversation, atmosphere is thoughtfully tailored, and human moments hold their own warmth. It’s a place well suited for those who love Japanese cuisine served without fuss, in an environment that feels both familiar and a little special — a welcoming spot to return to again and again.

Really good Japanese food at a great price and in a cozy environment! We had their bento box lunches and they were absolutely delicious and big in portion. In particular the Beef Negimaki Teriyaki bento were sooo good. The beef is wrapped into the shape of a sushi with some vegetable and sauce inside. It was so tender and juicy. We were absolutely blown away with this dish! Our regret of the trip to Philadelphia is that we did not get a chance to return back to this restaurant to have this bento again! The other bento was a salmon teriyaki bento. It was equally good, a very well pan fried salmon, crispy skin and soft tender interior. Great great Japanese restaurant. Highly recommended!

Good but not great! We tried their special CHIRASHI BOWL, Yaki Vegetable Udon noodles and veggie rolls. Overall the taste and service was good, but nothing special. So I think they are overpriced. The sashimi in the Chirashi Bowl was fresh but lacked flavor. It was as if the ingredients were placed in a bowl and served. They need to add some flavor/spice if this is their ‘special’ plate. Also the veggie rolls were bland. The ambience was nice. The music choice was bad. I prefer eastern instrumental music played in a sushi restaurant, definitely not pop music. They need improvement to deserve the additional star, just 4/5 now.

I'm not sure how I've lived here in the area for just about 10 years, but never heard of this place. The sushi was great and service was phenomenal. Very attentive and good for recommendations. Atmosphere is quaint and cozy. Will be back.

Had dinner here just the other day, it was nice it was not crowded at all but the service was still slow. The rolls were nice so was the miso and also the scallops in truffle sauce was quite good! They also offer a sushi boat we did not get it this time but maybe in the future.

I've been going to Hokka Hokka on and off for the last 10 plus years. They have had their high points and low points during that time period. Their highest point was from 2011 to 2014. This 3 year period, they had a very talented Head Sushi Chef. They had innovative and delicious sushi, creative, and tasty bar drinks, and their staff was amongst the best in the area. I love coming during all the seasons, but especially during the winter season when they have their fireplace on. Haven't been there since COVID, but all my photos are from my decade of frequenting this restaurant. Here are my recommendations: Appetizers: Negimaki Fried Oysters Tempura Uni Spoon Specialty Rolls: Chestnuthill Farmer's Spicy Love King Kong No Name Kitchen Food: Salmon Teriyaki Hamachi Kama (when they have it) Dessert: Literally, any of their ice cream cakes Mochi Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream (yes, you heard correctly, fried Ice cream. Also available in vanilla) Need to come back to Hokka to see how it has come along post-covid.

The complimentary green tea was so earthy and nutty, just like the young lady there described. It was the perfect warmth for me to peruse over the menu. I tried the Hokka soup with the chix dumplings and it was delicious. I settled with the sushi special of the night that had me stuffing my mouth with each piece. The mango made it amazing. It was warm and cool. I accompanied that with a side of tempura veggies. The ending green tea put me right where I needed to be before heading back out in the cold. The prices were more reasonable than I expected with the meal just at $35 buks and $42 total with tip. I will be back here for sure with friends and family.
